Afraid of the Dentist? These Coping Techniques Can Help!

Did you know that, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, around 36% of adults in the United States struggle with some degree of dental fear? If you belong to that group, you might wonder what options are available for people who are afraid of the dentist. What coping techniques might make it easier for you to settle into the treatment chair? This blog post provides some practical suggestions.

Communicate with Your Dentist

Most dentists are compassionate and understanding people who want their patients to feel comfortable under their care. They want to help assuage your fears! By explaining your concerns, you allow your dental team to adjust their approach, offer reassurance, and answer any questions you might have. Clear communication also helps your dentist identify specific triggers and suggest effective ways to address them. Remember, your dentist wants your visit to be as positive and stress-free as possible.

Ask About Sedation

Understandably, simply talking with your dentist may not feel like enough. If you struggle with significant fear, your care team might suggest that you be sedated during your procedure. With the help of nitrous oxide or intravenously administered medications, you may be able to fully relax throughout your appointment. Sedation can dull pain and, in some cases, make it so you do not even remember your procedure.

Perform Breathing Exercises

Simple breathing exercises can make a significant difference in how you feel at the dentist’s office. Slow, deep breaths help your body relax and can reduce feelings of panic or tension. You might try inhaling slowly through your nose, holding your breath for a few seconds, and then exhaling gently through your mouth. Repeat this process several times before and during your appointment to help calm your nerves and maintain a steady heart rate.

Bring a Support Person

Having a trusted friend or family member with you can help ease your anxiety. A support person can offer comfort, distract you from your worries, and advocate for your needs if you feel too nervous to speak up. Whether they wait in the lobby or are allowed in the treatment room with you, simply knowing they are there can do a lot to calm fears and make your experience less intimidating.

Bring Your Headphones

Unfamiliar sounds often increase anxiety during dental procedures. If you bring your headphones and listen to music, a podcast, or an audiobook, you can create a more relaxing environment for yourself. Choose something that soothes or entertains you, and ask your dentist if it is safe to wear your headphones during your treatment.

You do not have to let dental anxiety control your health decisions; with the right coping techniques, you can approach dental care with greater confidence and peace of mind!
