For some patients, visiting the dentist can bring feelings of nervousness or anxiety. Others may have a sensitive gag reflex, difficulty sitting still for extended periods or a fear of dental procedures. Dental sedation can make treatment a more comfortable experience. Two commonly used options are nitrous oxide sedation and IV sedation. Understanding how they differ can help you discuss the right choice with your dental practice.
What is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?
Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,” is a mild form of sedation delivered through a small mask placed over your nose. As you breathe the gas, you’ll begin to feel relaxed, calm and less aware of the sights and sounds associated with dental treatment.
You’ll remain conscious and able to communicate with your dental team throughout the procedure. One advantage of nitrous oxide is that its effects wear off relatively quickly after the gas is stopped. Depending on your dentist’s instructions and individual circumstances, you may be able to return to your normal activities shortly afterward.
Nitrous oxide may be a good option for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety or those who want additional relaxation during routine procedures.
What is IV Sedation?
IV sedation is administered through a vein, allowing the medication to take effect quickly. Depending on the medication and level of sedation used, you may feel deeply relaxed and become less aware of the procedure. You remain monitored by the dental team throughout treatment.
IV sedation may be considered for patients with more significant dental anxiety, those undergoing longer or more involved procedures, or patients who have difficulty remaining comfortable during dental treatment. Patients maintain consciousness with IV sedation, but time will seem to fly by, and there’s a good chance you’ll have little to no memory of the treatment.
Because IV sedation can have stronger effects than nitrous oxide, patients typically need specific pre- and post-treatment instructions. You may also need someone to drive you home after your appointment.
Which Sedation Option is Right for You?
The right choice depends on several factors, including your anxiety level, medical history, the type and length of your procedure and your overall health.
Nitrous oxide may be appropriate if you are looking for a lighter level of relaxation while remaining fully alert. IV sedation may be a better choice when a deeper level of relaxation is desired or when the procedure is particularly lengthy or complex.
Your dentist will review your health history, medications and treatment needs before recommending sedation. Be sure to tell your dental team about any medical conditions, medications or previous experiences with sedation.
If you are nervous about an upcoming appointment, talk openly with your dental practice about your concerns. Your dentist can explain the available sedation options, answer your questions and help determine which approach best fits your needs.
