Get Some Rest! Tips for Sleeping with a Nighttime Toothache

A toothache can be distracting during the day, but it can be particularly bothersome at night. It might even prevent you from sleeping! The best way to deal with this issue is to visit a qualified dentist for emergency care. But until you can get in for an appointment, how can you dull the pain enough to get some rest? This blog post offers helpful suggestions.

Use Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

Over-the-counter pain medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help to reduce the discomfort associated with a nighttime toothache. You should follow the dosage instructions on the package and avoid exceeding the recommended amount. These medications can provide temporary relief and allow you to fall asleep more easily.

Apply a Cold Compress

A cold compress can help to numb the area and reduce inflammation. You can wrap an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables in a thin towel and hold it against your cheek near the painful tooth for about 15 – 20 minutes. Do not place ice directly onto your skin, since this can cause damage. You should also be careful not to fall asleep while the cold compress is in contact with your skin.

Elevate Your Head

Lying flat can increase blood flow to your head, which may intensify tooth pain. You should use an extra pillow or prop yourself up so that your head remains elevated above your heart. This position can reduce pressure in the affected area and help to minimize discomfort throughout the night.

Avoid Certain Foods and Beverages

Spicy, acidic, or sugary foods and beverages can aggravate tooth pain, especially before bedtime. You should opt for bland, soft foods that do not require much chewing if you need a snack. Avoiding hot or cold drinks can also help, as temperature extremes may trigger sensitivity.

Rinse with Salt Water

A saltwater rinse can help to reduce inflammation and disinfect the mouth. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gently swish it around your mouth for about thirty seconds before spitting it out. This technique can soothe sore gums and provide temporary relief from toothache symptoms.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Brushing and flossing gently before bed can remove food particles and plaque that may contribute to pain. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid vigorous scrubbing of the affected area. Keeping your mouth clean can not only help to reduce discomfort but also lower your risk of further complications until you can see a dentist.

Use Clove Oil

Clove oil contains a natural compound called eugenol, which has both pain-relieving and antibacterial properties. To help ease nighttime toothache pain, soak a small piece of cotton in a few drops of clove oil and gently apply it directly to the sore tooth and surrounding gums. Leave it in place for a few minutes, taking care not to swallow the oil. This can help numb the area and reduce discomfort during the night. Always use clove oil sparingly, as excessive use may irritate the tissues.
